Need Tomato Growing Advice, What type grows best in Los Banos? (1 Replies, Read 81 times)

We haven't tried growing tomatoes for years, but have decided to give it a go. We don't need a lot of tomatoes, so we're going to just use a large container (whiskey barrel size).

My questions:
1. Does anyplace in Los Banos sell the half whiskey barrels or something equivalent in size (plastic pot would be ok, too)?

2. Are there certain types of tomatoes that grow best in our Los Banos climate, ones you've had great success with? We don't want huge or small tomatoes ( I sound like Goldilocks). We also want plants that won't turn yellow before their time.

3. I know my husband will want to buy the tomato plants "over the hill," as he works over there and has access to many nurseries. I told him I think plants bought there won't survive the Los Banos summer, but he thinks they all come from the same growers. Do you think we'd have a better chance of success if we bought local?

Thanks for your help!  :D

You can probably get a half barrel at Sores Lumber or posssiblt Sorensen.

A big plastic pot for $26 can be obtained at Home Depot.

Your best bet is to stay away  from heirlooms as they will take a long time to produce and it's hit or miss. Go with an early girl, better boy, or celebrity for best shot at success. You may want to amend the soil with epsom salts and 16-16-16 fertalizer to enhance root growth which is the basis for a healthy plant an fruit.

Consistant watering is important which means the same amount daily, but not too much much or you will get  cracked fruit, or blossom rot. It's hard to miss with those varieties. And don't fall for the topsy turvy craze!

I don't know of an advantage to buying over the hill. Lowes and HD get regular, if not daily deliveries and they all come from the same farm. I think if we were into a warmer spring it might make a diff, because our heat would shock the  new transplant.

Hope this helps! Sandman and I chat pretty frequently each week on strategies, tips, and tricks.....Happy to share.

Jamndessert Lady also does a large tomato planting.
