anyone know what those are? I just read the guest editorial by Gordon Borges this am in the Enterprise and he states they are ridicoulsly high...I was also wondering the same thing last night as I walked down the Rail Trail next to it.

also I am wondering why solar panels or other "green" energy sources (heating and cooling w/ water etc...) were not used? I know those can be expenisve initially but the cost savings in the long run may be worth it.

I can't quote the fees, but from what I remember they are reasonable.  One of the best features is that the fees are all inclusive; meaning tables and chairs are included in the price of the room.

To what is the good Mr. Borges comparing the rates to? The city, as I understand, was less than the fairgrounds, when considering the chairs, etc. were included. I have heard the fairground now matches that. here are the rates as posted on the city's website, so you decide. http://losbanos.org/images/stories/documents/rec/rec_facility_re ntal.pdf

There are varying rates for daily and monthly passes, but for functions (i.e. Weddings, Banquets, I can't spell it, but Mexican girls' 15th birthday parties etc.)  it's $1,800.

$1800 seems pretty high to me, but it is really about there is no competition other than the fairgrounds. They figure if you want to schedule a Wedding/Prom/Quincenera (there ya go Cityman :) ) you are going to pay whatever it is. Where else are you going to go, Hillmar? Santa Nella? I seem to recal reading they have already sold out most Saturday's through the end of the year?

One thing I am not sure if they have thought about, which I have seen on other community center "rules for booking", is requiring security guards be hired for events having liguor. In general I have seen 1 security guard for every 50 people.

<I do somewhat know what I am talking about. It isn't an exact comparison, as we don't use kitchens, etc, but my work puts on 500+ one day seminars a year accross the country (Reserve space anywhere from 2000 to 5000sqft) Local comparisions were $640 for the Multicultural Arts Center Merced, $750 for the Holiday Inn Fresno Downtown Hotel. For $2000 you have to be in the really big cities(Doubletree Hotel Atlanta NW, Holiday Inn Boston), and even then it sometimes isn't that much. Hilton at Fishermans Wharf is $900.

I was just reading Mr. Borges' remarks in the Enterprise. If you haven't, here they are: http://www.losbanosenterprise.com/2010/07/19/79078/gordon-borges -center-fees-are.html

Note in the last paragraph, his retiree group pays NOTHING, ZERO, ZIP, NADA for use of the Merced Center, including subsidized coffee.  Isn't paying anything higher in comparison to zero? Does he suggest the city provide free rooms and coffee to all groups?

He should make a more equitable comparison. What is the city charging for a given room in a given location versus another comparable facility rented out by another entity. For example, what does the fairground charge for its large room versus the same at the Community Center?

Here is a challenge for Mr. Borges: Call the DES Hall and ask if they will give a group use of the hall, utilities and provide coffee free of charge. Call the Fairgrounds and ask the same. Ask the schools. Write another letter to the editor with their responses.

Let's do a true comparison of pricing, not simply get angry because the city won't match a sweet deal no one else gets.
