On 11/05/2018 at approximately 1528 hours, the Bakersfield Communication Center (BCC) received a call of an incident involving a schoolbus. Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Bakersfield Area Office responded to the scene and investigated the incident.
During the course of the investigation it was determined Bakersfield City School District school bus #63 was transporting elementary age pupils on the afternoon route. The bus driver had just made the right turn onto westbound White Lane from southbound Union Ave. when an alarm indicated an emergency door handle had been manipulated. Almost immediately, numerous reports of a student falling from the drivers side emergency door were relayed to the driver. The bus driver stopped at the right curb at which time he observed the 6 year old male pupil running towards the bus on the sidewalk. Kern County Fire Department personnel along with Hall Ambulance personnel administered aid for a small scrape to the left elbow while on scene. Ultimately, the 6 year old was transported to Memorial Hospital for evaluation.
Upon inspection of the emergency door, it was found to be functioning properly and free of mechanical defects.
