Coalinga Area CHP Report Fatal Accident

On May 1, 2018, at approximately 0520 hours, the Fresno Communication Center (FCC) received a call of a traffic collision on SR-269 at Jayne Avenue. Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Coalinga Area Office responded to the scene and investigated the collision. During the course of the investigation it was determined this collision resulted in a fatality.
It was determined Mr. Navarrete was driving a 2004 Ford westbound on Jayne Avenue, east of SR-269 at an excessive speed. The driver of a 2006 Nissan was stopped for a posted stop sign on SR-269 northbound, on the south side of Jayne Avenue. The driver of the Nissan entered the intersection. Due to unknown circumstances Mr. Navarrete failed to stop for the posted stop sign and marked limit line and entered the intersection in a westbound direction at an excessive speed, and the front of the Ford collided with the passenger side door of the Nissan. Both vehicles traveled in a northwesterly direction and came to rest in a dirt agriculture field on the northwest corner of the intersection of Jayne Avenue and SR-269. Mr. Navarrete and the passengers of the Ford were able to self extricate from the vehicle. The driver of the Nissan was critically injured as a result of the collision and succumbed to his injuries prior to emergency personnel arriving on scene.
This collision is still under investigation. Alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor in this collision. Mr. Navarrete was placed under arrest for vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and booked into Fresno County Jail.
