At approximately 0302 hours, the Merced Communication Center (MCC) received a call of a traffic collision on Finch Road at Codoni Avenue. Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Modesto Area Office and Emergency personnel arrived on scene and located the involved party and involved vehicle. The party was a Hispanic male in his 20s, and was pinned into the vehicle, a Toyota Scion.
Upon initial investigation, it was determined the driver of the Scion was traveling eastbound on Finch Road, west of Codoni Avenue, at an unknown high rate of speed, approaching the east end of Finch Road. Due to the Scion’s speed, the driver was unable to navigate the turn, causing the Scion to exit the east road edge of Finch Road. The Scion collided with a metal barbed wire fence and concrete barrier, and proceeded in an easterly direction while rolling over into a dirt/mud field. The driver was not wearing his lap and shoulder safety harness.
The driver of the Scion sustained major traumatic head injuries, and was pronounced deceased on scene by AMR personnel. Alcohol and drugs are suspected to be a factor in the collision.
