Modesto Area CHP Reports Fatal Collision

On July 3, 2018, at approximately 1926 hours, the Merced Communication Center (MCC) received a call of a traffic collision on State Route 120 at N. Cleveland Avenue. Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Modesto Area Office responded to the scene and investigated the collision.
During the course of the investigation it was determined, a 71 year old female was driving a 2013 Scion eastbound on State Route 120, approaching the intersection with N. Cleveland Avenue, and was slowing down to make a left turn onto N. Cleveland Avenue. Mr. Flores was
driving a 2013 Ford eastbound on State Route 120, approaching the intersection with N. Cleveland Avenue, at 45-50 miles per hour, at an unknown distance directly behind the Scion. Mr. Arpoika was driving a 2009 Chevrolet westbound on State Route 120, approaching the
intersection with N. Cleveland Avenue, at 55 miles per hour. When Mr. Flores realized the Scion was slowing down, it was too late, and he was unable to apply the Fords brakes in time. The front of the Ford collided with the rear of the Scion. This impact pushed the Scion in a
northeasterly direction, into the westbound lane, and into the path of the Chevrolet. Mr. Arpoika witnessed the collision between the Ford and the Scion and observed the Scion traveling directly into his path of travel. Mr. Arpoika applied the Chevrolet’s brakes and steered to the right
in an attempt to avoid a collision, however, the front of the Chevrolet collided with the left side of the Scion. The collision between the Chevrolet and the Scion caused the female driver of the Scion to become pinned in the driver seat. After the impact, the Ford came to rest on the north dirt shoulder of State Route 120, east of N. Cleveland Avenue. The Scion came to rest in the intersection of the westbound lane of State Route 120 and northbound lane of N. Cleveland Avenue. The Chevrolet came to rest partially in the northbound lane and partially on the east dirt shoulder of N. Cleveland Avenue, just north of State Route 120. Two passer-bys stopped at the collision scene and rendered first aid to the female driver until fire personnel arrived on scene, and pronounced the female driver deceased while on scene. Mr. Flores and Mr. Arpoika did not claim any injuries while on scene. All occupants of the vehicles involved were wearing their seat belts.
Alcohol and/or drugs were not a factor in this collision.
