At approximately 0835 hours, the Merced Communication Center (MCC) received a call of a vehicle collision on State Route 108, west of Kennedy Road. Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Modesto Area Office along with emergency personnel arrived on scene and located two vehicles with major collision damage.
Upon initial investigation, it was determined a 20 year old male driver was driving a 2001 Infinity westbound State Route 108, west of Kennedy Road, approaching a right bend in the roadway. Mr. Prado was driving a 2015 Dodge eastbound State Route 108, approaching the Infinity. For unknown reasons at this time, the Infinity entered the eastbound traffic lane, directly in front of the Dodge. A head on collision occurred. The driver of the Infinity was pronounced deceased at the scene. Mr. Prado was taken by ambulance with minor injuries.
It has yet to be determined if alcohol and/or drugs contributed to this collision. The driver of the Infinity was not wearing his seat belt. State Route 108 was closed from the time of the collision at 1200 hours due to the investigation and scene cleanup. Caltrans diverted traffic through the area onto Orange Blossom Road with minimal delay.
The California Highway Patrol reminds motorist that seat belts, when properly worn, have the potential of saving lives.
