Vehicle vs. Pedestrian accident leads to fatality in Bakersfield

On July 20, 2017, at approximately 2110 hours, the Bakersfield Communication Center (BCC) received a call of a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision on Bernard Street west of King Street. Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Bakersfield Area Office responded to the scene and investigated the collision.

During the course of the investigation it was determined, Melody Cavazos was driving a 2003 Toyota westbound on Bernard Street approaching King Street at approximately 35 miles per hour. A male pedestrian was just west of Ms. Cavazos as he was utilizing the crosswalk to cross at Bernard Street from the north sidewalk to the south sidewalk. As the pedestrian crossed southbound into the westbound lane of Bernard Street, Ms. Cavazos failed to see the pedestrian directly ahead of her and collided into the pedestrian with the front of the Toyota. The collision caused major injuries to the pedestrian and he was immediately transported to Kern Medical Center.
