On February 25, 2019, at approximately 2350 hours, a California Highway Patrol officer engaged in pursuit of a speeding 2002 Nissan, which started on southbound SR-99 in Tulare County. The Nissan exited the SR-99 freeway at Merritt Drive, continued on several county roads, and traveled southbound on Drive 60. The Nissan approached a curve in the road on Drive 60 traveling at a speed in excess of 100 mph. Due to the Nissan’s high rate of speed, the driver was unable to properly negotiate the curve. The Nissan traveled off the east side of the road, collided with a utility pole, and overturned into a vineyard. There were no other vehicles involved in the collision, and there were no passengers in the Nissan. The driver of the Nissan suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision. The use of alcoholic beverages is suspected to be a factor in the incident.
